Who needs gloves? Keeper Carey stuns with ‘unbelievable’ outfield catch

Alex Carey didn’t have the gloves on during Australia’s Champions Trophy opener against England in Lahore, but that didn’t prevent him from grabbing an absolute blinder in the outfield.

After Australian captain Steve Smith won the toss and chose to bowl first at Gaddafi Stadium, England got off to a flying start with 12 runs from the opening over, including a belligerent six from opener Phil Salt over mid-wicket.

The following over, Salt attempted to slap Australian seamer Ben Dwarshuis down the ground for another boundary, but Carey ran across from mid-on and lunged to his right, plucking a one-handed chance behind his head.

It was an early contender for catch of the tournament, alongside Glenn Phillips’ diving effort in Karachi on Wednesday.

Carey was the GWS Giants’ inaugural captain, and the South Australian’s football background was evident during the wonderful piece of athleticism.

“That is an unbelievable catch,” former England captain Michael Atherton said in commentary.

“Carey, who we normally see behind the stumps with the gloves on, had to fling himself to his right and taken a quite superlative catch at mid-on.”

Former Australian cricketer Mel Jones continued: “If he ever wanted to go back to keeping, he might not do it now, if he keeps catching like that.”

Carey pouched another catch at mid-on in the sixth over to send England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith packing for 15, but it was a considerably simpler chance.

The 33-year-old wicketkeeper was picked as a specialist batter for Saturday’s ODI, with Josh Inglis standing behind the stumps for Australia.
