Beyoncé’s new album “Cowboy Carter” releases tonight at midnight, and still very little is known. She has released two songs from the record and a track list. “Texas Hold ’Em”hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, making her the first Black woman to hold that spot. But of course Beyoncé is not the first Black pop artist to try her hand at the genre. Hank Shteamer, our music writer, spotlights other Black artists who helped pave the way to this moment.
