7 Star Blastoise guide for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

7 Star Blastoise guide for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
How to beat 7 Star Blastoise in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's new Raid Event! Checks, counters, movesets, and more!

The 7 Star Blastoise Tera Raid Battle event for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is now live, and it’s thankfully a little bit easier than the 7 Star Venusaur earlier this week – assuming you have the right Pokemon, that is.

The new 7 Star Blastoise event lasts until March 12, and it’s got a decently threatening moveset. It uses Shell Smash when a quarter of its health has been taken out, which boosts its offenses and its Speed stat. It also uses Rain Dance halfway through the battle to boost the strength of its Hydro Pump. Blastoise itself is Tera Steel and can use Hydro Pump, Flash Cannon, Aura Sphere, and Iron Defense whenever it wants. We’ve put together a couple of counters you can use to take it down easily.

Since Blastoise uses Iron Defense, physical moves are a no-go here – boost up all you like, but Blastoise will be able to increase its Defense faster than you can increase your Attack. That means you’re best off with special moves, but there’s another problem. Normally, you’d decrease Blastoise’s Special Defense via a Pokemon with Acid Spray, but it’s Steel-type – Acid Spray doesn’t work. Most of these Tera Raid Battle events are difficult enough to warrant a team of at least two human players, and 7 Star Blastoise is no exception (though it’s a bit easier than the previous Venusaur event).

Here’s the best strategy we came up with: Tera Fire Vaporeon plus Tera Fire Volcanion. Vaporeon runs Water Absorb as its Ability plus Sunny Day, Haze, Fake Tears, and Weather Ball. Have it hold the Heat Rock item and give it max EVs in HP and Sp. Defense. Keep Sunny Day up at all times, attack using Fire-type Weather Ball, and when Blastoise’s shield breaks, lower its Sp. Defense with Fake Tears, and use Haze when it sets up Shell Smash. Vaporeon should be easy enough to find — Eevee is natively available in Paldea.

Volcanion, however, hasn’t been distributed in years. If you do have one, 7 Star Blastoise is almost unlosable if you pair it with a Vaporeon. With Volcanion, you’ll want to run Weather Ball and Flamethrower. Give these moves PP Ups if possible. Make sure Volcanion is Tera Fire, holding a Shell Bell, and has max EVs in HP and Sp. Defense. Vaporeon will set sun, and Volcanion will be able to fire off consistent damage between Weather Ball and Flamethrower. Blastoise won’t be able to do much to you at all, even after you Terastallize.

If you don’t have Volcanion, Gastrodon is a decent replacement. It resists most of Blastoise’s moveset as long as it has the Storm Drain Ability. Run Amnesia, Earth Power, and then Helping Hand to assist other players. Amnesia will increase your Sp. Defense, while Earth Power is consistent damage against Blastoise — especially if you’re Tera Ground. Volcanion is certainly the better Pokemon, but Gastrodon plus a Vaporeon can get the job done too. It’ll be slow, but it should be consistent enough to get you the win.
