On the Gold Coast on January 25-26, 2025 Rugby league fans, will get their first footy-fix for the year at the Country Trucker Caps Nines Premier League (9PL), returning to the Tugun Leagues Club on the Gold Coast this Australia Day weekend.

Now in its third year, the 9PL has become a staple of summer sports, combining elite rugby league action with a vibrant family festival.

“It’s been exciting to bring this concept to life over the past three years,” tournament director Anthony Mitchell said.
“It’s grown each year and we are certain players and fans will have a great time over the weekend with high quality footy, a festival and atmosphere all the family can enjoy and more.”

RUGBY LEAGUE ROYALTY AND RISING STARS
The 2025 9PL will feature a star-studded line-up of players, including Dally M winners, Origin representatives, and international stars:
Household names such as James Maloney, Alex Glenn, Matt Bowen, Corey Norman, Jordan Kahu, Josh Hoffman, Andrew Fifita, Blake Austin, Matt Moylan, Ben Barba and many more will take the field.
International Teams: Entrants from New Zealand and Papua New Guinea join teams from the Gold Coast, Queensland, and New South Wales.
The dynamic 9-a-side format provides fast-paced and entertaining games.

TEAMS
SOUTHERN SHARKS
Southern Sharks are back for their third year after going back to back in 2023 and 2024.
The team is coached by Jimmy Grehan and consists of players from Cronulla to Bateman’s Bay that play in the Group 6, Group 7 and Illawarra competitions.

DAWGS
The Dawgs are a group of mates who happen to be pretty good at throwing around the pig skin and running through people. Falling one short in their inaugural year, they are looking to go one better and are bringing an beefed up list do so. Underdogs last year and nearly took home the trophy.

REBORN
Reborn Athletic Hub brings a new level of gym experience to the Sutherland Shire aiming to inspire others to achieve goals they never thought they would. Semi-Finalists in 2024 and going down to eventual champions the Southern Sharks, they will be back for their second crack with gym owner Travis Young and captain/coach Brad Takairangi looking to recruit another star studded team.

LEGACY
Gold Coast based Legacy gym owner Alex Glenn formed the team to beat in 2024 that had a combination of Brisbane Broncos experience, touch football superstars and some rugby union flavour. They looked home in the semi-final before a try on the siren saw them eliminated by the Dawgs.

UNITED SC
United SC entered as Central Coast United in 2024, this team looked one of the favourites on paper and after the first day. Some costly errors in the quarter-final saw them eliminated by eventual winners Southern Sharks by 1-point. They will be looking to turn this result around and have managed to go under the radar prior to some of their huge player announcements.

SALTY PIGS
Salty Pigs were the fan favourites in 2024 with their bright pink kits featuring a surfing pig. The team had a strong Sydney Roosters flavour to it with the founding members of the lifestyle brand playing together in U20s. They came into the competition low on numbers and went down to the Dawgs in the quarter-finals. They have learnt from that experience and will look to be better prepared in 2025.

NORTH COAST MARLINS
North Coast Marlins Formed in the inaugural year by team owner and coach Francis Bennett, the North Coast Marlins represents the north coast of the Gold Coast to Brisbane. Adding players this year from Toowoomba and Ipswich the team is formed of mostly players at A-Grade level.

RLPA
The Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) is the official representative body of NRL and NRLW players. Entering an RLPA team in the 9PL is an initiative of their Past Player and Transition Program. It’s a great opportunity for past players to maintain connection to the game and share a great experience with fellow past players. The RLPA team is looking forward to returning bigger and better for their second appearance.

ACTV
Gold Coast based ACTV Strength Co will see owner and founder Anthony Bartolo team up with trainer Joe Vickery to form a team that has a strong Tugun Seahawks and Currumbin Eagles influence who met in the local A-grade grand final so they will be in form and ready to go.

ARTHUR BEETSON FOUNDATION
The ABF Future Immortals Tour events will provide the opportunity for former professional players to stay engaged in rugby league post the end of their careers. Retirement can be hard on players as they step out of the spotlight and transition back into the community and the ABF team will be making their first 9PL appearance.

CMBT
Selasi Berdie has teamed up with Dan Conn to enter a team sponsored by his brand CMBT Nutrition. Both former Tweed Seagulls players they have teamed up with Tweed Coach David Penna to form a team of current and former Tweed Seagulls.

EZ SQUAD
Eddy Pettybourne and Zeb Taia have this team from their brand and podcast The EZ Project. Zeb entered a team in the inaugural year of 2023 under Aim AllStars with lots of former professional player experience but was beaten in the quarter-finals by a young A-Grade side. They are looking to use their learnings from this experience and last year with The Srama Group to get the mix of youth and experience right in 2025.

KNUCKLE DUSTERS
Country Trucker Caps owner Brett ‘Knuclkes’ Hanly with Josh McGuire leading recruitment have kept their player list close to their chest however being around the competition in 2024, they will have plenty of idea how to build their team.

MAKATESI
Matakesi Rugby is a touring invitational Rugby 7s club based out of Bay of Plenty New Zealand that was founded in 2020 by Conor and Sarah Hirini with the aim of gathering players from different clubs, backgrounds and regions by giving them an opportunity to compete in tournaments across NZ and overseas while embracing the on and off field.
Key Players: Fletcher Carpenter, Tamairo Armstrong, Brad Armstrong, Waisake Salabiau, Taine Craig Ranga, Waymin Kapia, Eila Dina, Peni Lasaqa, Matt Landsdown, Leigh Hotham.
PAC BAABAAS
PAC BaaBaas were founded in 2016 by former Chichester RFC teammates, Jonathon Brown and Joseph Shopland. The Pig Athletic Club name embodies the spirit of camaraderie both on and off the field. Since debuting at the Saigon 10s in September 2016, PAC have been dedicated to providing unparalleled playing and travelling experiences for players seeking more than just a game. The transition to Rugby League 9s should not be a problem for this team and they will bring a unique style of play.

PORT MORESBY VIPERS
The Port Moresby Vipers (formerly the Port Moresby Bulldogs) are a Papua New Guinean rugby league team from Port Moresby. The team currently competes in the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition. They will bring a very young side over for the experience and will have a strong PNG Kumuls support staff to mentor the young side.
