Perth obstetrician Rhys Bellinge charged with manslaughter GBH
A court hears a prominent Perth obstetrician was allegedly crying, driving erratically and had been drinking before his Jaguar slammed into a Honda, killing a young woman.

A prominent obstetrician accused of manslaughter over a fatal crash on the weekend told police he had been unable to see while driving because of the tears in his eyes, the Perth Magistrates Court has heard.

Rhys Henry Stone Bellinge, 45, was allegedly behind the wheel of a Jaguar sedan that crashed into a Honda Jazz on Birdwood Parade in Dalkeith on Saturday night.

The driver of the smaller car, which was being used as a rideshare vehicle, suffered serious injuries while the passenger, 24-year-old Elizabeth Pearce, was killed.

On Monday evening, her family released a statement saying their "world is shattered".

"Our beautiful, bright girl brought sunshine to our lives and we are now in darkness," they said.

"We ask that you respect our privacy at this heartbreaking time."

Dr Bellinge also suffered significant injuries and was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where he remains.

He attended a court hearing today via audio link but was not required to enter a plea to charges of manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm.

A police prosecutor told the court Dr Bellinge admitted to officers at the scene of the crash he had been drinking, allegedly producing a blood alcohol reading of 0.183.

"He said he was unable to see while driving due to tears in his eyes," she said.

The prosecutor said dash cam footage taken from his vehicle showed Dr Bellinge driving erratically through the wealthy riverside suburbs of Dalkeith and Nedlands prior to the crash, including running red lights.

She said in total nine minutes of vision was captured, between 10:02PM and 10:11PM, although it is not clear if the crash itself was included.

Just before the crash on Birdwood Parade, which is a 50 kilometre an hour zone, he was allegedly travelling at 130 kilometres an hour.

The prosecutor described his behaviour as "arrogant, aggressive and intentional".

Accused recently separated from wife

Defence counsel Tony Hager said Dr Bellinge had been in emotional distress on the night of the crash because he'd recently separated from his wife, and had been staying with his father — high-profile Perth businessman Bruce Bellinge.

In applying for bail, Mr Hager told the court Dr Bellinge was a well respected member of his profession, with strong ties to the community, and presented a low flight risk.

"We have a nine-minute period between 10.02PM and 10.11PM that have put him here, we have an upstanding citizen otherwise," Mr Hager said.

"He's got a lot to lose if he leaves the jurisdiction and he knows that."

But the prosecution disagreed, arguing Dr Bellinge had access to significant wealth and means.

Police also raised fears for the safety of Dr Bellinge's estranged wife, based on "unflattering comments" he allegedly made just prior to the crash and captured by his in-car camera.

That footage has been supplied to the court and will be pivotal in Dr Bellinge's application for bail.

A further hearing on that application is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Mr Hager said while it paled in comparison to the trauma of his alleged victims, his client faced a lengthy recovery period for his injuries and would remain in a spinal brace for several months.

He asked Magistrate Cullen to consider that in her bail ruling, and said she had scope to impose severe restrictions on his movements if bail was granted.

"He is under absolutely no illusion as to what it would mean to drink a drop of alcohol or get behind the wheel," Mr Hager said.
