The number of users of generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications is increasing rapidly in Korea. In addition to ChatGPT, the number of native app users is also increasing rapidly, with the number of users of startup Luton tripling in half a year.
According to the "2024 Korea Mobile App Hall of Fame" released by IGA Works Mobile Index on the 12th, the total number of monthly active users (MAUs) of AI apps such as ChatGPT, Purple Lexity, A-Dot, Luton, and Zeta exceeded 6 million in the second half of this year.
ChatGPT, which recorded 1.27 million MAUs in the first half of this year, remained the top AI app in the domestic market as it increased to 2.58 million in the second half of this year. SK Telecom's telecommunications assistant service "Aidat" increased from 1.26 million in the first half to 2.39 million in the second half.
The number of "Luton" users operated by startup Luton Technologies more than tripled from 240,000 to 770,000, and "Zeta," an AI story platform developed by Scatterlab, was newly listed in the top five rankings with 580,000 MAUs.
Luton provides a variety of functions necessary for daily life and work, such as AI search, report writing, and PPT drafting, and Zeta is a kind of leisure service that allows users to talk to "AI characters."
The use of AI apps is now becoming more common, with most service users more than doubling compared to the first half of the year.
Considering that the estimates analyzed by Mobile Index are mobile usage in Android and iOS environments, the total number of users is expected to easily exceed 10 million if PC users are added. According to SimilarWeb, a traffic statistics site, the total number of visits to the Luton service alone exceeded 5 million last month, including PC users.
The service of Purple Lexity, a U.S. start-up invested by SK Telecom, also ranked in the rankings with 290,000 MAUs in the second half of the year. The number of users is also believed to have increased as SK Telecom has provided its paid subscription service "Purpleity Pro" to its customers for free since September.
Meanwhile, YouTube, which recorded 46.35 million MAU in the overall mobile app ranking, remained at the top of the list following the first half of the year. Kakao Talk ranked second (45.39 million) and Naver (43.41 million) ranked third.
