ASUS working on updated ROG Ally 2024 handheld, might appear at Computex

No details, but many expectations. 

As you may have noticed, ASUS has been displaying “2023” next to the ROG Ally name since the product was released. The company is accustomed to doing this with laptops, often making minor updates to the hardware specs but not necessarily to the external chassis.

Details on 2024 are a bit scarce at the time of writing because ASUS has only started reaching out to the media this week. But from what we have gathered so far, the ROG Ally 2024 is not meant to be a generation upgrade, but rather an update for the existing model with an important fix.

As we know, the ROG Ally suffers from SD Card issues that have not yet found a solution. However, ASUS has stepped up with the warranty and will not only fix the consoles affected by this issue but will also reimburse the cost of damaged SD cards. The 2024 model would seemingly have the SD card issues fixed.

Immediately after hearing about the new Ally, we began to wonder if ASUS could have been working on an ROG Ally with the AMD Strix Point APU, the new Zen5/RDNA3.5 processor. However, one would assume that would be the ROG Ally 2, and it would most likely use the Ryzen Z2 handheld APU design.

While we do not rule out that ASUS is working on such a device, the ROG Ally 2024 model is not expected to see any changes to the APU design. The current model already uses the Ryzen Z1 “Phoenix” chip, which is a dedicated version for gaming handhelds that lacks Ryzen AI features. The updated Hawk Point silicon only sees an update to the Ryzen AI core performance; thus there is no reason for an upgrade. That said, the ROG Ally 2024 is expected to stick to the Z1 series.
