Confusion over bizarre Bairstow review in 5-8 collapse

Confusion over bizarre Bairstow review in 58 collapse
'There was a clear edge'

England have fallen in a heap during the fifth Test against India, collapsing horribly and making a meal of the review system.

Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and captain Ben Stokes were all guilty of burning reviews for England with all three departing when the score was on 175. Bairstow's dismissal made it 4-175 and when Mark Wood went it was 8-183, making for a crazy 5-8 collapse.

Bairstow's review was under particular scrutiny when he sent a caught behind decision upstairs, only for it to come back to bite him.

In his 100th match, the 34-year-old appeared to gesture towards one Indian player that he'd hit the ground after he was given out.

Snicko showed a slight sound on its graph with Bairstow sent packing for 29.

"There was a clear sound, I don't know why (he thought he hadn't hit it) ... the bat hadn't hit the ground," cricket icon Harsha Bhogle said on commentary.

Indian legend Ravi Shastri concurred, adding "there was a clear edge".

The fifth Test at Dharamshala started with Ben Stokes winning the toss and electing to bat.

Zak Crawley got England started with his 79 at the top of the order with the side 3-137 when he was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav who snared his third victim.

Yadav then put England into a spin, removing Bairstow and Stokes, going past 50 wickets in 12 matches.

Ravichandran Ashwin finished off the rest of England's batting lineup to claim 4-51 as England were bowled out for 218.

India proceeded to put England to the sword with the bat as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma combined for a 104-run partnership at the top.

Jaiswal departed for 57 when he was stumped off Shoaib Bashir's bowling.

India finished the day 1-135 at stumps with Sharma on 52 and Shubman Gill hitting 26 not out.

India have already wrapped up the series and lead 3-1 following a five-wicket win at Ranchi.
