Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein have shared whether they think Everton are safe from Premier League relegation after defeating Liverpool 2-0 on Wednesday (24 April).

The Toffees completed their first Merseyside victory over the Reds at Goodison Park in 14 years, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin also handing Liverpool a huge blow in the Premier League title race.

The three points have seen Sean Dyche’s side move eight points away from the dreaded dropzone and, though they are not mathematically safe, both Bent and Goldstein agreed it is difficult to see Everton being relegated now.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Thursday (25 April, 4:13pm), Bent said: “Fair play to Everton, and Sean Dyche as well. They’re safe now, I think. You’re asking a lot of Luton.”

Responding, Goldstein stated: “Factually, they’re not safe. But I do agree that they’re safe now.”

Everton claim crucial victory over Liverpool at Goodison Park

There seemed to be a buzz around the stadium before kick-off, with fans looking at Liverpool’s recent form, and the atmosphere was definitely buzzing once the final whistle sounded.

Despite being hit with two different points deductions this season, Everton have fought against the odds and are surely safe from relegation even if mathematically they aren’t quite over the safety line.

Dyche’s team have saved their best until the end-of-season run-in, having won three of their last five matches, drawing once against Newcastle United, while a 6-0 thrashing by Chelsea is best forgotten.

The team have look galvanised in recent weeks but the performance against Liverpool was right out of the top drawer and delighted the home supporters, who also got to revel in the fact the Reds’ title hopes took a potentially fatal blow.

Considering the ongoing uncertainty at Goodison Park, with the takeover continuing to stall, securing their Premier League status will be one of the best feelings of the season.

With matches against Brentford, Luton, Sheffield United and Arsenal remaining, Everton will be hoping to finish the season on a high and be able to celebrate their long-awaited safety.

In other Everton news, a senior player may never start for the club again after the Chelsea loss and is now very likely to leave in June.
