Manchester United vs Watford live updates: Premier League latest as Rangnick's side held to 0-0 draw
Manchester United failed to capitalise on their dominance as they were held to a 0-0 draw against a resolute Watford side at Old Trafford.
The home side spurned an array of chances throughout a game they had control of from the first whistle. The best chances fell to Cristiano Ronaldo, who hit the post and had a goal disallowed in the first-half, and Anthony Elanga, who failed to convert a big chance in the second.
Watford knew they were in for a hard ride when Ronaldo struck the woodwork with a swivelling shot in the opening five minutes, before Bruno Fernandes stretched to poke a Paul Pogba cross wide.
The United onslaught continued for the remainder of the first period as Fernandes headed over, Victor Lindelof saw a close-range volley blocked and Alex Telles grazed the side netting with a free-kick.
United could have had a penalty a few minutes before half-time, but referee Kevin Friend waved away the appeals after Elanga was felled by Craig Cathcart in the box.
In the second-half, Watford tried to give United some defending to do of their own and almost took a shock lead when Emmanuel Dennis side-footed into the gloves of David De Gea from close range.
With 55 minutes gone, Ronaldo went down under a challenge in the box, but, after a VAR check, play resumed. From the next attack, Pogba found Elanga in the box with a brilliant back-heeled pass and the Swede rode a challenge before firing wide when he looked almost certain to put United ahead.
From that moment on, United kept pushing to find a winner and Watford defended resolutely. Ronaldo saw a low shot blocked before heading onto the roof of the net as time began to run out for the hosts.
Watford could have snatched a winner when Kuco robbed Pogba in the middle of the park, surged forward to the edge of the United box but fired wide.
The Hornets held on to claim a valuable point on their quest for Premier League survival, leaving Manchester United wondering how they were unable to take all three points from the game. The result sees both sides remain in their original position, with United 4th and Watford 19th.
