Streaming giant Amazon axes Neighbours just two years after
Long-running soap opera Neighbours will air for the last time in December 2025 after Amazon decided to bring an end to the long-running TV soap. Neighbours turns 40 this year.

Neighbours has been axed again just two years after the long-running television soap was picked up by streaming service Amazon.

Amazon confirmed the drama series will finish up at the end of 2025, 40 years after making its television debut on Channel Ten.

"Neighbours has brought so much joy over the last 40 years to its fanbase globally and in the UK," an Amazon spokesperson said.

"Forty years is an incredible milestone and we are proud that Amazon MGM Studios was able to have a small part of bringing further episodes to Freevee and Prime Video customers over the last two years, spanning over 400 episodes."

Neighbours was initially axed in 2022 after Britain' Channel 5 announced it would be dropping the show from its line-up.

More than 1.5 million Australians watched the show's "final episode", which saw superstars Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce and Jason Donovan reprise their roles in the show.

Just four months later, the producers of the show, Fremantle Media, revealed it had partnered with Amazon to revive the show.

Amazon said the show had often appeared in the top-10 titles in the UK, and secured the show's first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Daytime Series in 2024.

But the final episode of the show will now air in December 2025, marking 9,363 episodes.

"Audiences all around the world have loved and embraced Neighbours for four decades and we are very proud of the huge success over the last two years," Neighbours Executive Producer Jason Herbison said.

Only a footstep away

After nearly 9,000 episodes, 63 weddings, 20 births and 68 deaths, Neighbours is coming to an end.

"As this chapter closes, we appreciate and thank Amazon MGM Studios for all that they have done for Neighbours — bringing this iconic and much-loved series to new audiences globally.

"We value how much the fans love Neighbours and we believe there are more stories of the residents of Ramsay Street to tell in the future."

Neighbours helped launch the careers of many Australian actors who have since gone on to worldwide stardom, including Margot Robbie, Russell Crowe and Chris Hemsworth.

March 18, 2025 will mark the show's 40th anniversary.
