Eagles QB breaks record as Chiefs’ fatal flaw exposes Mahomes in Super Bowl boilover

For so long, the Kansas City Chiefs had been inevitable – until now. Now it is Jalen Hurts’ time.

Once not even considered a lock to be the franchise quarterback, Hurts is now a Super Bowl winner and MVP after the Philadelphia Eagles stunned the Chiefs 40-22 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

With it, Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata became the first Australian to play in and win a Super Bowl.

Super Bowl

Mailata, who famously didn’t even know how to put on a helmet when he first arrived in America, is the biggest success story to come out of Stoutland University — a reference to Jeff Stoutland, the Eagles offensive line coach that helped turn him into one of the NFL’s best left tackles.

Mailata led all offensive linemen in the NFL this season with a 94.9 PFF run-blocking grade, although it was his pass-blocking that was particularly impressive in Monday’s Super Bowl as he helped keep the pocket clean for quarterback Hurts to dissect the Kansas City defence.

Hurts finished the game completing 17-of-22 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns along with a Super Bowl record 72 rushing yards.

Outside of a mistimed throw that was picked off early in the second quarter, Hurts married calm and chaos on the field, making accurate plays in the pocket and extending others when pressured.

The opposite was true for Mahomes, who was sacked a career-high six times.

While Kansas City’s offensive line has been an issue for much of the season, Mahomes had made a habit of escaping the pocket and turning magician. But on Monday, his tricks no longer worked.

Vic Fangio’s vaunted defensive front were constantly getting home. The result? Mahomes finished the first half with 33 passing yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions on 6-for-14 passing.

The Chiefs entered halftime trailing 24-0 and that was despite holding superstar Eagles running back Saquon Barkley to just 31 yards off 12 carries while rarely used third-string receiver Jahan Dotson was Philadelphia’s leading option through the air with two catches for 42 yards.

Try telling an Eagles fan before kick-off that they would be ahead by three scores at halftime with nine yards being Barkley’s longest run and Dotson as their top receiver.

That is just how fierce the Eagles defence was playing, and it all came to a fore in Kansas City’s fourth drive of the second quarter as Mahomes was sacked on back-to-back plays, prompting former NFL quarterback turned ESPN commentator Dan Orlovsky to declare he had “never seen Patrick as unsettled” since the Super Bowl LV loss to Tampa Bay.

Mahomes then proceeded to throw a pick-six in the face of more pressure from the Philadelphia front as Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean took it the distance.

When the Chiefs finally got the ball back with just under two minutes left in the second quarter, it was one chance for Mahomes to lead Kansas City on one of those game-defining drives we have come to expect from the three-time Super Bowl MVP.

Again, for so long Mahomes and the Chiefs have been inevitable. But on Monday, it was the defensive front getting to No. 15 that seemed inevitable.

And, in what was a hammer blow, Mahomes again turned it over and this deep time deep in Kansas City territory to instead gift Philadelphia one final scoring opportunity.

It didn’t take long for the Eagles to capitalise as A.J. Brown got free to score Philadelphia’s third touchdown of the game.

It just wasn’t happening for Kansas City, with Mahomes finding an open DeAndre Hopkins on the final drive of the half for what should have been a third-down completion only for the veteran receiver to drop it.

It capped off a frustrating first half for the Chiefs, who had just one first down while Mahomes’ top target Travis Kelce was held without a catch on two targets.

The Eagles, who opened the scoring on Monday through the tush push, extended the lead out to 27-0 early in the third quarter before Hurts threw a perfectly placed 46-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith to push the scoreline out even further.

While nothing seemed to be working for Kansas City, the Chiefs eventually got on the board right before the fourth quarter after Mahomes linked up with much-improved speedster Xavier Worthy for the score.

But the two-point attempt came up short, leaving the Chiefs trailing 34-6 and Kansas City never threatened to make it much closer as Philadelphia claimed its first Super Bowl win since 2017.
