Kmart's Airtag device recalled over severe health risk

Kmart's Bluetooth GPS smart tracker, known as the Anko Smart Tag, has been recalled after not including important warning information about the dangerous battery inside.

Product Safety Australia said the Airtag dupe — compatible with Apple devices that have the Apple Find My app — does not comply with mandatory information standards and customers have been urged to keep the product out of reach of children.

The button/coin battery inside the tag has a risk of choking, or causing severe internal burn injuries or death to young children if they gain access to the button/coin batteries, and swallow or place them inside their body. "Severe or fatal injuries can happen in two hours or less," Product Safety Australia states.

What should Kmart customers do?

Consumers have been warned to keep the product out of reach of children and to contact Kmart to receive important warning information, as they may not be aware the product contains this hazardous button battery.

The recall affects Kmart Smart Tags sold nationally under product number 2024/20082, which was available for sale between December 28, 2023 and January 16, 2024.
