Fisherman missing after suspected shark attack off Newcastle coast

A search operation is resuming for a fisherman who was reportedly pulled into the water by a great white shark during a recreational competition at sea.

Witnesses reported the man was pulled into the water after getting caught in a fishing line at about 1pm on Sunday 23 February, an NSW Ambulance spokesperson told AAP.

The incident happened about 55km off the Newcastle coast.

Police said emergency crews and rescue helicopters have been dispatched as the search restarted early on Monday.
