A man who was trapped in his crushed car after a crash in Sydney's north today has been rescued and rushed to hospital in stable condition.

Firefighters used cutting tools to free him from the wreckage while he was treated by paramedics.

The man, aged in his 40s, was driving on the Spit Bridge in Mosman this morning when it was involved in a crash with a truck.

Superintendent Adam Newberry, of Fire and Rescue New South Wales, said emergency services arrived at the scene just after 7.30am and found the man's car "absolutely crushed, mangled".

"Firefighters moved in using hydraulic tools and hand tools and started to cut the vehicle away and unbolt various parts of it while paramedics continued to stabilise and treat the casualty," he said.

When he was freed the man was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

One of the three southbound lanes on the Spit Bridge remains closed.

Motorists are being warned to allow extra time for travel.

Diversions are still affecting the lower north shore and Northern Beaches.
