Wigan Athletic striker Stephen Humphrys has been the subject of a bid from a League Two club, according to reports.

The 26-year-old striker has played 85 games across two spells for the Latics, with a season-long loan in the Scottish Premiership with Hearts inbetween.

TEAMtalk have reported that Wrexham have made an offer for the striker, with the Welsh club currently second in the fourth division.

Humphrys has been in solid form since returning from Tynecastle, scoring nine goals and three assists in 33 matches this season. His last goal came against York City in the second round of the FA Cup.

The Oldham-born striker has plenty of experience within League One, appearing for Rochdale, Scunthorpe United, Southend United and Shrewsbury Town since graduating from Fulham’s academy in 2016/17.

Wigan’s number 11 has never played below the third tier in his career, with Phil Parkinson’s side seeking to achieve back-to-back promotions this campaign and to gain promotion into League One. Humphrys will be competing with the Dragons’ front line of Paul Mullin, Steven Fletcher, Ollie Palmer and Sam Dalby for a first team place.

The Hollywood-owned club have a prolific frontline for the division and sit third in total goals scored in the league this season. Only Notts County and Stockport County have more.

Tics boss Shaun Maloney may choose to sell Stephen Humphrys this window, with his contract expiring in the summer. Transfermarkt currently values the 26-year-old at €500,000 (£425,000). Being able to cash in on a player who will leave on a free should be a no-brainer, and will boost the Lancashire club’s coffers in the future. However, Wigan Athletic have struggled for goals in their frontline, with no forwards having surpassed 10 goals in the league this season.

Adding yet another striker that is better than the League Two level to their arsenal will be yet another boost to Wrexham’s promotion push. Having the competition up front with ex-Cambridge United man Paul Mullin, and Championship veteran Steven Fletcher is already a very strong attack, but adding Humphrys elevates Phil Parkinson’s attack further. The Red Dragons are just two points behind Stockport at the top of the table, and perhaps it will be this signing that can propel them above the Edgeley Park side.
