Sydney commuters faced lengthy delays on Monday night after a person near the tracks in the city's inner-west plunged the train network into chaos.

The individual was spotted near the tracks at Burwood, prompting lengthy delays on the North Shore and western lines as hundreds of thousands of workers attempted to get home.

It's understood the police were in attendance and the individual was removed from the area safely around 3pm.

However, the network went into meltdown with the massive delays as the knock-on delays were felt during rush hour.

Huge crowds of frustrated commuters were seen waiting for updates at Wynyard Station.

'Allow plenty of extra travel time due to a person near the tracks at Burwood earlier,' T1 Sydney trains posted on X.

'Services may be less frequent and trips may take longer than usual. Delays are expected to continue throughout the afternoon.'

Sydney Trains warned that the knock-on effects will continue well into Monday night

'We expect delays to continue throughout the evening and run at a reduced frequency until the end of service tonight,' it later added.

Social media users were quick to vent their frustration over the chaos.

'How can a person near the tracks cause chaos over the whole system for hours?' asked one.

'I've been stuck near Blacktown Station for 30 mins without moving.'

Services on other lines were also disrupted,

NSW Police declined to comment on the incident.
