TEAMS: Smithy's VFL Round 3

All the teams for Round 3 in the Smithy’s VFL.
Former GWS Giants captain Callan Ward will play his first Smithy’s VFL match in 14 years when he returns from a shoulder injury in the Giants’ clash with Sandringham at Manuka Oval on Saturday.
Ward, 33, hurt his shoulder in the Giants’ AFL Opening Round victory over Collingwood and has been asked to blow out the cobwebs in the early game for the first time since he played 23 VFL matches for Williamstown from 2008-10 when the Seagulls were aligned with the Western Bulldogs.
There will be big names everywhere for early-arriving fans, with the Giants to also unveil two of their top three draft picks in No.12 selection Phoenix Gothard after a bout of glandular fever and No.44 pick Joe Fonti after an adductor issue, while big man Brayden Preuss has shaken a back problem to play his first game of the year.
The Zebras have come to the party as well, with St Kilda defender Dougal Howard making his VFL debut after a hamstring, Zak Jones having been dropped from the AFL and Angus Hastie coming back from a taste at the top level, while Irish recruit Liam O’Connell will debut.
But they have lost recruit Misilifi Faimalo, who has been ruled out for four months with a broken ankle.
Geelong has named Gary Rohan to make his return from a back injury and Norm Goss medallist Shaun Mannagh when it meets Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval on Sunday.
Rohan hasn’t played this year, but will line up alongside fellow Cats debutants Mannagh, Footscray recruit Jamieson Ballantyne and South Barwon signing Todd White, with vice-captain Brayden Ham having quit the club during the break to play local footy full time.
The Bullants have four debutants, with suburban products Isaac McMillian, Lucas Edmonds and Maison Goodman to take their first bow and last-minute recruit Tristen Waack to also play after defecting from Williamstown on the eve of the season.
North Melbourne has made seven changes from its win over Carlton as it welcomes premiership favourite Brisbane Lions to Arden St on Sunday.
Jaidyn Stephenson, Curtis Taylor and Toby Pink were dropped from the AFL team, Beaconsfield’s Kade De La Rue is on debut, Box Hill recruit Lachie Wynd plays his first Roos’ game and experienced pair Jarrod Lienert and Nick Hodgson all come in to replace AFL debutant Tyler Sellers and fellow call-ups Charlie Comben, Hugh Greenwood, Blake Drury and Biggie Nyuon and the injured Louis Butler, who misses three games with a hamstring injury.
The Lions will have Brandon Ryan at their disposal for the first time, with Darcy Fort, Ewan Macpherson and Deven Robertson also coming into the team.
Port Melbourne will welcome back luckless midfielder Lachie Modica for his first game since an early 2022 knee injury for its relocated game against Casey Demons at Kinetic Stadium as selectors wield the axe from the disappointing Good Friday loss to Frankston.
The Borough has dropped key forward Archi Manton, ruckman Tom Hofert and small forward Mitch Moschetti, while Owen Mulady and Kyle Viccars are injured and Matt Gahan is unavailable.
Sandringham recruit Cody Henness also plays his first game since 2022 and Carlton AFL signing Sam Philp is in for his first Port game alongside Josh Green and Harry Stubbings.
The Demons have named Melbourne star Lachie Hunter on the comeback trail alongside Dan Turner, Adam Tomlinson and Brayden Laurie, while Caleb Windsor’s big brother Kai and Brayden Laplanche will make their Casey debuts, with star Collingwood signing Campbell Hustwaite to miss a chunk of the year with a stress fracture in his foot.
Williamstown regains ruckman Tom Downie for its big Standalone clash with an injury-hit Southport at DSV Stadium.
Downie was a late withdrawal from the Good Friday escape against Coburg and missed the VFL’s loss to the SANFL last week, but he is back alongside Essendon recruit Jack Brown on Seagulls’ debut with Frosty Miller medallist Brodie McLaughlin to miss with an adductor injury from the Coburg game.
The Sharks had no luck with injury last year and have been hit again, with Jack Sexton (shoulder) ruled out for six weeks, while Max Pescud, Rhys Clark, Wylie Buzza and the suspended Jay Lockhart also won’t make the trip.
They have called on ex-Roo Matt McGuinness, Werribee recruit Keegan Gray, Suns Academy signing Will Derrington, big man Riley Bowman and forward Jye Lockett to fill the gaps.
Gold Coast will aim to kickstart its premiership defence with a powerful team being named to take on Box Hill Hawks at People First Stadium on Saturday.
Levi Casboult will make his Suns’ VFL debut and play only his second game at this level since 2018, while Brandon Ellis, Alex Davies, Ned Moyle, Alex Sexton and Connor Budarick will also try to win their AFL spots back, with Will Graham and Ethan Read having been promoted, Leo Lombard in the AFL Academy team to take on Coburg and Josh Zanker-Close out for five weeks with a shoulder injury.
Richmond has a debutant for its Tiger Tussle against Werribee, with St Kevin’s Sam Davidson to play his first game after Joel Garner entered concussion protocols and Nick Girolami was ruled out for four months with a foot injury.
Werribee loses Louis Pinnuck to a cork, with Matt Keast coming in as a like-for-like replacement.
Livewire forward Ned Cahill has overcome injury to play for Carlton against Collingwood, with Liam McMahon also back and Bailey Lambert and debutant Kristian Ferronato to run out for the first time, while former Blues captain Ben Crocker will make his Magpie comeback against his old team and Fin Macrae will also try to make a statement in a team that has lost Sam Sofronidis for at least five weeks with a foot injury.
All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.
Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally. This week’s game will be Carlton vs Collingwood.
